How Bond Calculator Works
Annual coupon payment is simply face value × coupon rate, and current yield divides that annual coupon by the bond's current market price (not its face value) — so current yield rises as the market price falls below par. The calculator also tracks whether the bond is trading at a premium (price above face value) or a discount (price below face value).
Yield to maturity (YTM) is harder to isolate algebraically, so the calculator finds it by testing candidate yields with the standard bond pricing formula — price = coupon × [1 − (1+r)⁻ⁿ] / r + face × (1+r)⁻ⁿ, using semi-annual or annual periods as selected — and narrowing in through repeated bisection until the calculated price matches your entered market price to within a fraction of a cent.
A price-sensitivity table then reprices the same bond at yields half a point to three points away from the calculated YTM, showing how much the bond's price would rise or fall if market yields moved — bond prices always move opposite to yields, and longer terms amplify that sensitivity.

Mistakes to Avoid
- Reading current yield as your total return — it only reflects coupon income against today\'s price and ignores the gain or loss you\'ll realize when the bond matures at face value; yield to maturity is the more complete figure.
- Entering annual payment frequency for a bond that actually pays semi-annually (the norm for most U.S. Treasury and corporate bonds) — this changes both the coupon schedule and the calculated YTM.
- Assuming a bond trading at a discount is automatically a bad investment — a lower price relative to face value is often exactly why its yield to maturity ends up higher than its coupon rate.
Tips for Best Results
- If two bonds have similar coupon rates but different market prices, compare their yield to maturity rather than their coupon rate — YTM accounts for the price you\'d actually pay today.
- Use the price-sensitivity table to gauge interest-rate risk before buying, especially for longer-maturity bonds, which move more in price for the same yield change than short-maturity bonds.
Fixing Common Problems
My calculated YTM doesn\'t match a number I saw quoted elsewhere. — Check whether the other source is using semi-annual or annual compounding periods and the same market price — a mismatch in either assumption will produce a slightly different YTM even for the identical bond.
