How Bond Calculator Works

Annual coupon payment is simply face value × coupon rate, and current yield divides that annual coupon by the bond's current market price (not its face value) — so current yield rises as the market price falls below par. The calculator also tracks whether the bond is trading at a premium (price above face value) or a discount (price below face value).

Yield to maturity (YTM) is harder to isolate algebraically, so the calculator finds it by testing candidate yields with the standard bond pricing formula — price = coupon × [1 − (1+r)⁻ⁿ] / r + face × (1+r)⁻ⁿ, using semi-annual or annual periods as selected — and narrowing in through repeated bisection until the calculated price matches your entered market price to within a fraction of a cent.

A price-sensitivity table then reprices the same bond at yields half a point to three points away from the calculated YTM, showing how much the bond's price would rise or fall if market yields moved — bond prices always move opposite to yields, and longer terms amplify that sensitivity.
