Percentages Made Simple: Percent, Percent Off, and Percent Change

Percentages come up constantly in everyday life — a sale sign, a tip, a test score, a shrinking or growing measurement — but "percent" actually covers a handful of different questions that get confused with each other. Knowing which one you're actually asking makes the math a lot less confusing.

Basic percent: what is X% of Y

This is the most common one: you want a portion of a number. To find 20% of 85, you convert the percent to a decimal (20% = 0.20) and multiply: 0.20 × 85 = 17. That's the entire calculation — the percent sign just means "out of a hundred," so 20% is really 20/100, which simplifies to the decimal 0.20.

Percent off: what a discount actually costs

This is a basic percent calculation with one extra step. A $60 jacket at 25% off first needs the discount amount — 25% of $60 is $15 — and then that amount gets subtracted from the original price: $60 − $15 = $45. Where this trips people up is stacked discounts. "25% off, then an extra 10% off" is not the same as 35% off, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original one. Working out each discount as its own step, in order, is the only way to get the real final price.

Percent change: how much something actually moved

Percent change answers a different question entirely — not "what's a portion of this number" but "how much did this number move compared to where it started." The formula is (new value − original value) ÷ original value × 100. If a stock goes from $40 to $50, that's a change of $10 on a $40 base, or 10 ÷ 40 × 100 = 25% increase.

A close relative is percent error, which uses the same structure but compares a measured or estimated value against a known correct one — useful in science, engineering, or just checking how far off an estimate was. The 10% mental math trick — and where it breaks

For quick estimates, finding 10% of a number is easy: just move the decimal point one place left. 10% of 85 is 8.5. From there you can build other percentages by combining multiples of that — 20% is double 10%, 5% is half of 10%, 15% is 10% plus 5%, and so on. It's genuinely useful for tipping, quick discount checks, or a sanity check on a calculator's answer.

The trick falls apart on awkward numbers. Finding 7% of 43.60, or 33% of 128, doesn't decompose cleanly into round fractions of 10%, and trying to force it usually introduces more error than just doing the multiplication directly. That's the point where reaching for an actual calculator is faster and more reliable than mental math, especially when the result needs to be exact rather than a rough estimate.
