Mistakes to Avoid
- Getting the comma order wrong on a line — the format is thickness, width, length, quantity, and entering them out of sequence (like putting length before width) will produce an incorrect total for that line without necessarily looking obviously wrong.
- Mixing up inches and feet within a line, since thickness and width are inches while length is feet, matching the convention used elsewhere in this calculator group.
- Forgetting to include the quantity value on a line and defaulting to a single piece when you actually need several of the same spec.
Tips for Best Results
- Group identical lumber specs onto a single line using the quantity value rather than repeating the same thickness/width/length on multiple lines — it's less error-prone.
- Double check one line's board foot math against the Board Foot Calculator if a multi-line total looks off, to isolate which line has the mistake.
Fixing Common Problems
My project total looks too high or too low compared to a manual estimate. — Review each line individually — a single line with the wrong quantity or a thickness/width mix-up can throw off the entire multi-line total; the placeholder example ("1,12,8,2") shows the expected thickness, width, length, quantity order.
