How Sleep Calculator Works
Sleep naturally occurs in cycles of roughly 90 minutes each, and waking up in the middle of a cycle (rather than between cycles) tends to leave you feeling groggier. The calculator works backward or forward from your chosen time in steps of 90 minutes, for cycle counts of 4, 5, and 6 (roughly 6, 7.5, and 9 hours of sleep).
It also adds your estimated time to fall asleep on top of each option, since the clock keeps running during that time even though you're not actually cycling through sleep stages yet.
The result is a short list of bedtime or wake-up options, each corresponding to a whole number of sleep cycles, so you can pick whichever fits your schedule and desired amount of rest.
