How to Add Page Numbers to PDF

Each page of your PDF is imported as a template with FPDI, exactly as with rotating or merging, preserving the original content, size, and orientation of every page untouched.

On top of each imported page, the tool writes a text label using a customizable format string — the default is "Page {n} of {total}" — where {n} and {total} are replaced with the actual page number and page count, adjusted by whatever starting number you specify (useful if this PDF is a continuation of another document).

You control exactly where the label appears (six position options: top or bottom, left/center/right), the margin distance from the page edge, and the font size and style (bold, italic, or both), all calculated in millimeters so placement is consistent across differently sized pages.

Safe & Secure

Your files are uploaded over an encrypted (SSL) connection. We don't store, read, or share the contents of your files — they're processed to generate your result and are not retained on our servers afterward.

Who Uses Add Page Numbers to PDF?

  • Adding page numbers to a report or thesis before final submission.
  • Numbering pages in a legal document or contract for reference during review.
  • Preparing a printed handout where readers need to reference specific pages by number.

Limitations to Avoid

  • Starting numbering from a cover page when the numbering is meant to start after it — check the starting-page and starting-number options before applying.
  • Placing the page number in a spot that overlaps existing footer content — preview the result before finalizing.

Tips for Best Results

  • For documents with a cover page or table of contents, set the numbering to start from the first content page rather than page 1 of the file.
  • Bottom-center or bottom-right placement is the most common convention for printed documents.

Privacy Commitment

We respect your privacy. All files are processed securely and are never sold, shared, or used for anything beyond generating your result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I customize the page number format?
Yes — the format field accepts any text with {n} and {total} placeholders, so you can produce labels like "Page {n} of {total}", "- {n} -", or just "{n}" depending on your preference.
Can numbering start from something other than 1?
Yes — set a custom starting number, which is useful when this PDF is meant to continue the page numbering of another document, like an appendix following a main report.
Where can the page numbers be placed?
Six positions are available: top-left, top-center, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-center, and bottom-right, with an adjustable margin from the page edge.
