Unlock PDF

Unlike most tools on this site, PDF unlocking runs entirely client-side using PDF.js and PDF-lib — your file and password are never uploaded to a server.

PDF.js opens the encrypted PDF using the password you provide, decrypting its contents in-browser. PDF-lib then rebuilds a new PDF from those decrypted pages with no encryption applied, which you can then download.

Because this process requires the correct password to decrypt the file, it only removes protection from PDFs you can already open — it is not a password-cracking or recovery tool.

Your files are uploaded over an encrypted (SSL) connection. We don't store, read, or share the contents of your files — they're processed to generate your result and are not retained on our servers afterward.

• Removing a password from a PDF you created and know the password to, so it's easier to work with across your own tools.
• Unlocking an old personal document (like a scanned tax form) whose password you remember but that's inconvenient to enter every time.
• Preparing a password-protected file for further processing (merging, splitting, editing) that requires it to be unlocked first.

• Attempting to unlock a PDF you don't have rights to access — this tool is for removing a password you know, not for bypassing security on someone else's protected document.
• Forgetting to re-protect a document after unlocking and editing it, if it should stay password-protected for its intended recipients.

• If you only need to remove restrictions (like printing or copying limits) rather than the open password itself, check whether the tool distinguishes between the two — they're different types of PDF protection.
