How BTU Calculator Works
The calculator starts from a widely used HVAC rule of thumb: roughly 20 BTU of cooling capacity per square foot of floor area for a room with standard 8-foot ceilings. It multiplies your room's length by width to get that floor area, then applies the base 20 BTU/sq ft rate.
That base figure is then adjusted for sunlight exposure (shaded rooms need about 10% less capacity, very sunny rooms about 10% more) and for ceiling height relative to the standard 8 feet, since taller ceilings mean more air volume to condition for the same floor area.
The result includes a practical sizing range (±10% around the estimate) since actual requirements also depend on factors like insulation, window count, and occupancy that a simple floor-area formula can't capture.

- Forgetting to adjust ceiling height when a room has vaulted or unusually tall ceilings — more air volume needs more capacity even at the same floor area.
- Picking a unit right at the low end of the suggested range for a room with poor insulation or lots of west-facing windows, where the sunny-room adjustment may still undersell the real load.

- Use the sizing range shown, not just the single BTU number — buying within that ±10% band gives some margin without badly oversizing the unit.

Fixing Common Problems
My AC unit sized to this estimate still doesn't cool the room well. — Check for factors the formula doesn't capture — poor insulation, a large number of occupants, heat-generating electronics, or direct sun exposure beyond the shaded/normal/sunny setting can all push the real requirement above a simple area-based estimate.
I'm getting a much higher BTU figure than the AC unit I already own. — Recheck your ceiling height and sunlight settings — both scale the result meaningfully, so an unusually tall ceiling or a sunny setting on a room that's actually shaded most of the day can shift the number more than expected.
